20 – 24 June offered help on using ZFS on Linux and updating with Updian, as well as a few videos of presentations from the recent OSDC 2011.
Gunnar began by giving a thorough introduction to running a native ZFS on Linux. The file system cum logical volume manager boasts pool based memory usage, verifiable data integrity, snapshots and more features beyond other data systems on Linux. As ZFS source code’s license is not compatible with the Linux kernel, it must be separately installed with one of the two available ports. The 1st ) is based on the FUSE kernel interface and cannot support all ZFS features, but offers an Ubuntu package. The 2nd (http://zfsonlinux.org) implements ZFS as a native kernel module, but not yet stable. Here, Gunnar provided an example of the 2nd port method, installing on Ubuntu.
Marcus followed with his tip for managing Debian web updates with Updian. The PHP tool replaces the tedium of manual updates, by checking the server via SSH for apt-get updates. It then updates the package list, presenting it on the web front end. From there, servers can be selected to join an update queue to be processed accordingly. Of course, Marcus didn’t forget to demonstrate an Updian installation too.
Last but not least, Rebecca posted a few speeches from OSDC 2011 online. Those who couldn’t join the Open Source Data Center Conference, can now view the videos of a handful of presentations. These include Bernd Erk’s on “Automation in the Data Center” and “Monitoring with Icinga”, Ken Barber’s on “Advanced Puppet” and Thomas Halinka’s on “GlusterFS”. Weekly Snap: OSDC 2011 gone by, OSSBIG coming up & NagiosQL review
18 – 22 April closed the 3rd OSDC and heralded the upcoming OSMC, while recommending the OSSBIG and NagiosQL.
In a part 3, Philipp added NagiosQL to the Nagios Config Interfaces series. The PHP based configuration tool for Nagios and Icinga saves all data in a MySQL database to be exported as configuration files. With the help of a wizard, installation is easy and error-free – all that is needed is a web server with PHP, a Pear package and MySQL database. Philip praised the well structured user interface, with handy clone/copy functions. However, a cross-functional search tool is lacking and various configuration options can be somewhat cumbersome. He found NagiosQL good for enterprise environments nonetheless, as configuration files can be exported via SSH or FTP to other instances.
Moving on to events, Manuela tipped off the Open Source Software Business Information Group’s upcoming event in Vienna. The half-day conference on 31 May features both business and technical presentations on open source and its applications.
She also bid the 3rd OSDC 2011 farewell. Held on 6 – 7 April with a special focus on Automated Systems Management, the sell-out conference will return next year on 25 – 26 April. All presentation slides are now online for download and attendees should receive their access details per email in the coming week. In the same breath, Manuela touted the next event – Open Source Monitoring Conference on Nagios on 29 – 30 November. We look forward to seeing you there again!
OSDC 2011: "Ein gelungener Blick über den Tellerrand", "Inspirative Vorträge", "Beflügelt zu neuen Ideen"…
…so oder ähnlich lautet das abschließende Statement der Teilnehmer der OSDC 2011. Fast zwei Wochen ist es nun her seitdem die 3te Open Source Data Center Conference vom 06.-07. April in Nürnberg tagte.
Für das Konferenzprogramm wurde in diesem Jahr erstmalig ein Schwerpunkt zum Thema “Automatisiertes Systems Management” gesetzt. Hierbei wurde mit anschaulichen Vorträgen und Workshops aus drei Themenbereichen: “Configuration Management”, “Cloud Computing” und “Datacenter Infrastructure” ein vertieftes Wissen zur ganzen Bandbreite zu neuesten Trends und Themen aus dem DataCenter Bereich vermitteln. U.a. gab es Vorträge und Workshops wie Ken Barber von Puppet Labs mit “Advanced Puppet Topics“, Prof. Stefan Edlich zu “NoSQL in der Cloud: Patterns, Architektur und Erfahrungen” oder Bernd Erk mit “Icinga – Enterprise Open Source Monitoring“.
Ab sofort sind alle Vortragsfolien durch Klick auf den jeweiligen Vortrag zum download auf der Konferenzhomepage zu finden. Weekly Snap: OSDC 2011 reflections
4 – 8 April was dedicated to the OSDC and a handful of the many pertinent presentations.
Bernd shared his reflections on the first day, looking at the FAI project and Thomas Lange’s presentation on “Fully Automatic Installation”, OpenQRM the modular cloud computing system presented by Matthias Rechenburg, configuration tool Cfengine and Red Hat Network Satellite for systems management with its community project Spacewalk.
On the second day, Bernd gave kudos to Dr. George Kolomvos with his presentation on ‘Open Source Observatory and Repository’, Thomas for his on Puppet configuration management basics and Martin Loschwitz on LINBIT and cluster communication. All in all, in its 2 days of immense knowledge sharing, Bernd applauded the 3rd OSDC’s success.
