LinuxTag 2012, ich komme!

LinuxTag 2012 - Thomas Gelf, Die eigene Cloud aus dem Linux-BaukastenRichtig schön war es auf der OSDC, mit einem Programm ganz nach meinem Geschmack. Die spannenden Schwerpunktthemen rund um das Thema Devpos und Skalierbare Infrastrukturen sind vom 23.-26. Mai auch im Programm des LinuxTag 2012 wieder stark vertreten. Da freue ich mich natürlich, mit einem Vortrag mit dabei sein zu dürfen!
Unter dem Titel Die eigene Cloud aus dem Linux-Baukasten möchte ich möglichst neutral und kritisch die einzelnen Komponenten beleuchten, die sich im Fundus der OpenSource-Komponenten rund um das Thema Cloud finden lassen. Vom Netzwerk über Storage bis hin zum Deployment und Konfigurationsmanagement soll alles dabei sein.
Kein leichtes Unterfangen und eine Menge Material – das wird sicher spannend!

Weekly Snap: Heatmap for Icinga, JIT cool, Windows 2000 and SOAP/REST?

14 – 18 June warned Windows 2000 users of looming support freezes, gawked in awe at JIT, shared Julian’s LinuxTag presentation, introduced the SOAP and REST developer conflict and announced our first Icinga addon.
Reflecting on hot summer days in data centers, Jannis revealed Heatmap for Icinga. Now while enjoying ice cream, admins can view their server room and react quickly to temperature problems. With a drag and drop, servers and sensors can be laid out on the map and intervals for temperature processing set. Replete with dashboard, it integrates seamlessly into Icinga Web and is ready for download at netways.org as always.
We paid our respects to JIT (JavaScript InfoVis Toolkit) while Julian shared his presentation slides from LinuxTag in Berlin on Nagios and Icinga. He then went on to bring bad news to Windows 2000 users – as of 13 July 2010, Microsoft will end support for all Windows 2000 regardless of type. This means no free updates or security updates, which may also mean security problems will no longer be fixed. On the same day, normal support for Windows 2003 Server (and Server R2) will run out and only extended support will be provided. So only issues critical to security will be fixed, for all others a patch will be offered only to those in their paid support program. This extended support will be available to 14 July 2015- so it seems now is high time to switch out!
Finally, Bernd introduced his new series to tackle the SOAP or REST question which all developers inevitably face in service oriented development. He plans to look at both architectures in detail and compare their advantages and disadvantages. In the meantime he pointed to a previous post from Julian for a good starting point. Till then, keep your eyes peeled!

Weekly Snap: Linux Tag, Web Monday, Ubuntu cleaning and Teltonika UTMS routers

7 – 11 June was full of presentations and tips- from both Linux Tag and Web Monday, on Ubuntu cleaning and Teltonika UTMS routers.
Beginning with events Bernd reported from Linux Tag in Berlin. He uploaded his presentation on “Open Source Data Warehouses or IT Management” from Wednesday. He also tipped off Michael’s speech on “Puppet and Subversion for Configuration and Change Management”, also available to download.
Manuela got excited about Web Monday held this time at the NETWAYS office. Presentations included “Application Scale Out – Best Practice” (Bernd Erk of NETWAYS), “Magento as an E-Commerce Solution” (Michael Rohrmüller of PIXELMECHANICS), “UKIJS – Simple UI Kit for Complex Web Apps “(Sven Winkler of Nix-wie-weg.de) and an appearance by Jürgen Enninger representing the Bavarian regional center of excellence in culture and creative industries. Projects in the limelight included Pecha Kucha Nürberg, Coworking Space and Twist Projekt.
Moving on to tips, Marius shared his Ubuntu cleaning tricks against accumulated data dumps. Ubuntu Tweak for Apt Cache files and old global configurations from uninstalled applications, GConf Cleaner for clean Gnome registration and finding old entries in the backend home to be saved for configuration reload. Lastly BleachBit for program specific individual parts eg. Bash history, Chromium Cache and leftover files from Windows and Mac users, freeing up the most memory thanks to its comprehensiveness.
Finally Hardware man Martin had a look at Teltonika RUT105 HSUPA UTMS 3G/EDGE/GPRS/ VPN routers, for cheap internet connections via UMTS. The router can be powered by POE, has an inbuilt WLAN access point and can establish secure connections via VPN. It’s handy for setting up WLAN hotspots at events and connecting remote locations with VPN over a mobile network. All that’s needed is a permanent IP address for the routers and a mobile data package from companies like Vodaphone who offer flat rates. Martin even offered a Teltonika guide to VPN configuration for those with sparked interest. Check it out at our shop!

NETWAYS beim LinuxTag

Heute Morgen hat der LinuxTag in Berlin wieder seine Tore geöffnet und bietet neben verschiedenen Flächen für Aussteller ein interessantes Vortragsprogramm.

Wir von NETWAYS sind sowohl am Mittwoch und Donnerstag mit interessanten Vorträgen dabei. Heute Morgen habe ich mit dem Thema „Open Source Datawarehouse für das IT-Management“ begonnen.

Michaels Vortrag zum Thema „Puppet und Subversion für das Configuration- und Changemanagement“ fand in der Mittagszeit großen Anklang und zeigt das wir mit Puppet auf das richtige Pferd im Bereich Konfigurationsmanagement gesetzt haben. Gemeinsam mit der Linux Academy hatten wir dann am Nachmittag noch die Gelegenheit unser Online-Training vorzustellen und aktuelle Infos rund um Nagios und Icinga zu vermitteln und mit den Teilnehmern zu diskutieren.
