16 – 20 June brought much ado about monitoring – from an LConf release and training course on Icinga 2, to a guide to SMS alerts and a network performance tool.
Christian began the week by announcing a new webinar on Foreman for OpenNebula, as Silke introduced our new training course on Icinga 2.
Meanwhile, Michael released LConf 1.4.2 and LConf for Icinga Web 1.4.0 with compatibility updates for Icinga 2.
Continuing on the monitoring theme, Georg explained how to set up Icinga / Nagios SMS alerts on Linux systems, and Tobias showed how to assess network performance with Iperf.
Lastly, Lennart came to a Puppet course’s rescue in Paris as a substitute trainer.

LConf 1.2 – Es wurde aber auch mal wieder Zeit!
Wie der Titel schon sagt, bin ich der Meinung das ein neues LConf-Release dringend notwendig war. Im Großen und Ganzen hat sich sehr viel unter der Haube und in Sachen Benutzerfreundlichkeit getan.
Ein kurzer Einblick:
- Der Installer
Das gute, alter install.sh Skript war zwar ganz nett, musste aber aufgrund gestiegener Anforderungen und unter Berücksichtigung von Standard-Mechanismen einem Makefile weichen. Nun wird mit configure, make, make install installiert 🙂 - Konsolidierter Code
Dieses Thema war mit in den Vorgänger-Versionen längst ein Dorn im Auge. LConfExport.pl und seine Kollegen haben zwar gut funktioniert, waren aber alles andere als „sparsam“ programmiert. So wurden nun LDAP Funktionen zusammengefasst und / oder in Module ausgelagert. - LDAP Schema Import
Nach und nach stirbt die alter Konfigurations-Variante des OpenLDAP aus. Während die slapd.conf Konfigurationsdatei unter SLES oder RHEL 5 noch zu finden ist, setzt Debian oder RHEL6 auf die neue Konfiguration mit cn=config. Quasi die LDAP-Konfiguration im LDAP 😉
Diese hat den ein oder anderen Administrator bei der Installation von LConf an den Rande des Wahnsinns getrieben, da der alte Installer dafür schlichtweg nicht ausgelegt war. Dies ist nun mit dem Makefile anders. Das configure-Skript erlaubt die Wahl zwischen alter und neuer OpenLDAP-Konfiguration - Die Test-Suite
LConf ist vom Quell-Code her keine Raketentechnik. Der Knackpunkt bei LConf ist eindeutig die Logik! Die Entwicklung neuer Features birgt die Gefahr, eine alte Logik zu verfälschen oder gar zu zerstören. Um hier auf Nummer sicher zu gehen wurde ein kleiner „Test-Kit“ eingebaut, mit dem man als Entwickler das nötigste testen kann. Die aktuell vorhanden Test-Szenarien sind zwar noch nicht allumfassend, dies wird aber sicher mit Zeit besser werden. - Host- und Service-Eskalationen
Ich fasse mich kurz: Haben noch gefehlt, sind jetzt drin 😉
Weiterhin wurden auch viele, viele Bugs in den verschiedensten Bereichen beseitigt.
Am LConf-Modul für Icinga wurde ebenfalls weiter entwickelt und konfiguriert. So wurde alle Benutzer-Masken und Menüs meiner Meinung nach deutlich verbessert. Fügt man nun beispielsweise einem Host ein neues Attribut hinzu, werden auch nur die zum Host-Objekt passenden Attribute in der Auswahlliste angezeigt. Eine Vielzahl solcher kleiner Änderungen bewirken aber doch deutlichen Komfort.
LConf 1.2 und das dazu gehörige Icinga-Modul (lconf-icinga-mod 1.2.1) stehen unter netways.org zum Download bereit.

Weekly Snap: PRIMERGY Solutions & New Noma, BP-Cronk and LConf Releases
6 – 10 December handed out a few monitoring addon gifts for Christmas and promised one more for the Fujitsu server family.
Bernd reported from his visit to the PRIMERGY Solution Briefing in Augsberg which gathered server specialists from across Germany. Thanks to a long-standing partnership with Fujitsu Technology Services, NETWAYS had the opportunity to contribute a presentation introducing the current plugin check_fujitsu_primergy and the integration of iRMC cards. Both can be found in our demo system, open to all. To top it off, he promised a new plugin in progress for the Eternus series which will be released at the year’s end.
In the same spirit of giving, Jannis laid out a bunch of new monitoring tool releases under the NETWAYS Christmas tree: NoMa 1.0.6, LConf for Icinga 1.0.1 and BP-Cronk 1.0.1. Alongside bug fixes, the latest version of NoMa (Notification Manager) features new filter capabilities. So rules can now be set with host groups as well as hosts and services, saving time and sanity. LConf for Icinga brings an optimized directory information tree that automatically unfolds to show changes made and accepts common keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl-C for copy) too. Finally, the latest Icinga Web cronk for Business Process Addons improved the configuration parser and made saving new configs more intuitive. Weekly Snap: OSMC rush and LConf releases
20 – 24 September released LConf in two versions and got excited about the OSMC coming up in two weeks.
Jannis announced the release of LConf 1.0 and LConf for Icinga 1.0.0. The all purpose LConf 1.0 boasts new features such as service groups, SVN revisions, new LDAP schemas and attributes, not to mention the disposal of many a bug. Download it out at netways.org.
LConf for Icinga 1.0.0 on the other hand offers direct management of LConf trees through Icinga Web, intuitive drag ‘n’ drop and automatic alias updates, key word search, filter templates and search/replace via regular expressions. To top it off, it also supports multiple simultaneous database connections and copy/move elements between them, as well as cronk integration so that hosts in Icinga host/service views jump to their counterparts in the LDAP tree. Finally from the events team, Rebecca reminded late birds that they have 2 weeks to go to the Open Source Monitoring Conference on 6-7 October. With a varied program of speeches and workshops in German and English, the conference is known for its relaxed atmosphere of discussion and exchange, as well as casual networking. Supported again by Thomas Krenn AG and their exhibition of the latest server technology, and Linux Magazine’s streaming services, attendees won’t have to miss a speech despite the parallel presentation tracks. LConf 1.0 & LConf for Icinga 1.0.0
Vor einiger Zeit hat Tobias in seiner Blogserie „Nagios Config Interfaces“ unser Tool ‚LConf‘ vorgestellt, mit dem sich auch große Monitoringumgebungen bequem konfigurieren lassen. Wir freuen uns, heute Version 1.0 des freien (GPL) Tools veröffentlichen zu können.
Neben neuen Features wie Servicegruppen, SVN Revisions, neuen LDAP Schemas und vielen neuen Attributen mussten auch zahlreiche Bugs das Zeitliche segnen. Herunterladen kann man sich LConf wie immer auf netways.org.
Der Komfort von LConf steht und fällt natürlich mit dem verwendeten LDAP Editor. Für alle Benutzer der neuen Icinga-Web Oberfläche (und die, die es noch werden wollen) haben wir deshalb ein eigenes, (nicht nur) auf LConf zugeschnittenen LDAP Modul entwickelt: LConf for Icinga.
