Weekly Snap: MySQL Backup, Teltonika & HTML/JavaScript Tips
6 – 10 February offered a nice mix of developer and sys admin tips, hardware and consulting news as well as general software food for thought.
Along these lines, Julian discovered the software complexity behind iPhones’ ‘home’ button, while Sebastian shared his tip for backing up MySQL with LVM snapshots.
Jannis then offered four JavaScript/HTML features for developers to impress their friends with – cross origin resource sharing, manifest files, deferred scripts and error objects.
Birger briefly reported on an Icinga project at Pegasus, transforming RDD files into SQL-ready performance data.
Lastly, Martin reassured shoppers at our hardware store, that there are alternatives to the much loved, but discontinued Teltonika ModemUSB/G10 GSM.

Wer kennt das nicht – an einem Standort soll die Temperatur bzw. Temperatur und Luftfeuchtigkeit gemessen werden, aber es ist kein Internetzugang für die Alarmierung verfügbar. Weekly Snap: Clever Elements, Teltonika Modems, NConf & Apprentice sought
5 – 9 July called out to IT apprentice hopefuls, reviewed NConf and saw the arrival of Teltonika modems and a new Managed Services client.
To begin, hardware man Martin announced the arrival of his latest shipment of Teltonika USB/G10 modems, the replacement for Falcom Samba 55/56/75. Perfect for monitoring SMS alerts with the handy SMS Server Tools 3, this sought after modem will be available as long as stocks last (till the next delivery in autumn) – so get in quick.
Following on, Tobias posted part 2 of his Nagios Config Interface series with a look at NConf. The PHP based configuration tool for Nagios is of course free under GPL to download and needs just an Apache web server, PHP, MySQL and Perl to get started. Tobias gave it the thumbs up for its user-friendly (albeit full) web interface with ‘multi-modify’, search filters, entry clone capabilities and ‘host dependency viewer’ for graphical visualisations of parent/child relationships. However, with config imports restricted to one object type at a time, he sympathised with admins who would flinch at the idea of sorting configs into individual files.
Bernd E gave a last minute reminder to IT apprenticeship seekers , that one in Systems Integration is still available. The position is perfect for students interested in open source data center solutions, with more information available at jobs.netways.de.
Meanwhile Bernd L introduced our newest Managed Services client – Clever Elements GmbH, a small online email marketing provider from Berlin with big customers the likes of Siemens, BMW and IBM. With all services moved onto a new high availability cluster, Clever Elements is now equipped to grow without fears of downtime. From our data center, we’re happy to support the most user-friendly email marketing software ever – yes we’re fans!
Weekly Snap: Linux Tag, Web Monday, Ubuntu cleaning and Teltonika UTMS routers
7 – 11 June was full of presentations and tips- from both Linux Tag and Web Monday, on Ubuntu cleaning and Teltonika UTMS routers.
Beginning with events Bernd reported from Linux Tag in Berlin. He uploaded his presentation on “Open Source Data Warehouses or IT Management” from Wednesday. He also tipped off Michael’s speech on “Puppet and Subversion for Configuration and Change Management”, also available to download.
Manuela got excited about Web Monday held this time at the NETWAYS office. Presentations included “Application Scale Out – Best Practice” (Bernd Erk of NETWAYS), “Magento as an E-Commerce Solution” (Michael Rohrmüller of PIXELMECHANICS), “UKIJS – Simple UI Kit for Complex Web Apps “(Sven Winkler of Nix-wie-weg.de) and an appearance by Jürgen Enninger representing the Bavarian regional center of excellence in culture and creative industries. Projects in the limelight included Pecha Kucha Nürberg, Coworking Space and Twist Projekt.
Moving on to tips, Marius shared his Ubuntu cleaning tricks against accumulated data dumps. Ubuntu Tweak for Apt Cache files and old global configurations from uninstalled applications, GConf Cleaner for clean Gnome registration and finding old entries in the backend home to be saved for configuration reload. Lastly BleachBit for program specific individual parts eg. Bash history, Chromium Cache and leftover files from Windows and Mac users, freeing up the most memory thanks to its comprehensiveness.
Finally Hardware man Martin had a look at Teltonika RUT105 HSUPA UTMS 3G/EDGE/GPRS/ VPN routers, for cheap internet connections via UMTS. The router can be powered by POE, has an inbuilt WLAN access point and can establish secure connections via VPN. It’s handy for setting up WLAN hotspots at events and connecting remote locations with VPN over a mobile network. All that’s needed is a permanent IP address for the routers and a mobile data package from companies like Vodaphone who offer flat rates. Martin even offered a Teltonika guide to VPN configuration for those with sparked interest. Check it out at our shop!
