Weekly Snap: OSDC to OSMC, MySQL Server and Nagios USB Traffic Lights

von | Jul 5, 2010 | WeeklySnap

28 June – 2 July turned over the month with a quick transition from OSDC to OSMC. In between Bernd slipped in an article in PHP Magazin, we celebrated the project of June and Martin showed off his latest addition to the hardware range.
Nagios USB Traffic Light (Medium) in combination with check_usbtlight.pl, Linux and “clewarecontrol” tool, makes keeping an eye on the monitoring system that much easier. Compared to its little sister, this traffic light sits neatly on the desk to radiate Nagios/Icinga states in 3 directions. Should its 3.7 m USB cable be too short, a USB Cat5e extension of 60m ought to do the trick. And to top it off, Martin showed us how to coordinate multiple Nagios USB traffic lights over disparate locations with one Linux server.
From monitoring to databases, Manuela tipped off Bernd’s article “MySQL Server – New Features”. Published in edition 4.2010 of PHP Magazin it offers tips on backup and recovery as well as ways to avoid data disaster with PostgreSQL.
Closing up the OSDC, Julian uploaded his speech (IT Service Management with Open Source Software – Open ITSM) to provide an overview of the most important ITSM tools from the open source world for Event, Operations and Incident & Problem Management, Service Desk and CMDB.
In the same tone, Manuela bid the OSDC farewell by hitting off preparations for the Open Source Monitoring Conference on 6-7 October. She reminded potential speakers to submit their ideas to the Call for Papers and called out to the early birds to snap up the ticket specials.
