Dr. Sven Wohlfarth | Corporate-IT-Monitoring bei der ING-DiBa AG (DE)

In such an huge company like ING-DiBa the monitoring infrastructure, which has grown over the years, is a fragile and complex construct. To provide a flexible and robust monitoring service to our specialist team, we decided to exchange our monitoring tool for Icinga.

This speech will show which path we have chosen to face the challenges in this migration project. This project has been successful at any time. However, we also learned, we hadn´t only to solve technological issues. Due to the high number of involved specialist teams, the determining factors were the right communication and an appropriate risk and expectation management. With the help of practical examples we will show how we managed to find the right balance to realize this project at the desired date.

Carsten John | Environmental Monitoring in der Praxis (DE)

Power supply or cooling problems can have massive impacts on the availability. The speech will show by means of practical examples, which parameters should be monitored and how it can be managed in particular cases. Thereby we will especially focus on details necessary to process performance data correctly.

To be precise the talk clarifies which data has to be collected and how to be processed safely afterwards. This presentation points out the pitfalls which can lead to the collapse of a (at a first glance perfectly running) system in an emergency case.

Christophe Haen | Monitoring at CERN (ENG)

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. Its main function is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research. The experiments positioned around the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), require large scale computer infrastructures in order to process the data generated by the collisions. Also the control of the LHC itself relies on a complex computer infrastructure. The CERN IT department provides many different services to the staff and users, and is most importantly, the main operator of the LHC GRID. The Grid is a federation of world-wide compute facilities used to analyze all the data collected. It comprises

200 000 cores spread over 34 countries. All those large scales computer centers require a careful monitoring, but each of them has specificities which lead to different monitoring strategies and tools.

The various approaches for this challenge used at CERN will be given followed by a description of the plans for the future developments.

Ralf Döring | Monitoring bei der DB Systel (DE)

DB Systel, the IT service provider for the DB Group, runs amongst others a multitude of Linux systems. A distributed Nagios environment is being used for the platform monitoring. At present, 40,000 host and service checks are being performed with an upwards trend.

In my presentation I will describe the process itself, the used techniques and also how to update continuously all Nagios servers as well as the systems which need to be monitored with the required configurations, several times a day. The corresponding data come from an external CMDB and a Meta configuration description for the definition of services and also the assignment of services to hosts and hosts groups on the basis of different criteria.

Jörg Sterlinski | Monitoring bei der GISA (DE)

The focal point of systems monitoring at GISA GmbH is monitoring automation and integration using Icinga. Important areas of the monitoring infrastructure is the fully automated configuration of all configuration items using templates and the ITIL V3 based implementation of service operation and service transition.

Currently 3,100 systems are being actively monitored with a total of 22,000 checks. This corresponds to approximate 10,000,000 checks carried out per day, with an upwards trend. To handle and prepare this information flood, specially adapted dash-boards have been developed for example for the Network Operation Center or the Service Desk. The focus was predominantly on the establishment of usability and reducing the complexity of Icinga Web, setting-up a support and knowledge database to evaluate technical malfunctions, incident templates and incident management.

Icinga Team | Icinga (DE)

By the time of the conference, the Icinga team will have accomplished version 1.8 of the third and last version for this year. One example for the increased usability would be the integrated module connections for PNP4NAgios and the BP add-on but also the many new features of Icinga-Classic and Icinga –Web. Besides a short summary of the last modifications, this presentation will introduce the latest Icinga version and its opportunities.

Jean Gabès | Shinken (ENG)

Compared to the well known Forks Icinga and Centron Shinken is a complete rewrite based on Python. Performance problemes in the existing core implementation of Nagios were the main motivation for Shinken. Since 2009 the project goes in its own way and focusses on global distribution with simple load balancing between different datacenters.

Beside the technical stuff like performance and distributed architecture the talk will focus on new added values important for a system administrator. Focus is on business impact analyses, event correlation and auto-discovery.

Sven Nierlein | Mod-Gearman (DE)

Mod-Gearman connects Nagios to the open source based MessageQueueing system Gearman and allows though a high performance and distributed monitoring installation. The Mod-Gearman worker can either be used only for load spreading but also to monitor network segments remotely. The competence of the workers is configured by host or service groups. Furthermore a connection of PNP4Nagios is possible. 

This presentation will explain the technical basics of Gearman, describe typical applications and also deliver an insight into the tools around Mod-Gearman (send gearman, gearman_top,...).

Rihards Olups | Zabbix 2.0: Even Better (ENG)

Zabbix is an open source monitoring solution, and it is getting more and more popular every day. Given that last appearance of Zabbix was at OSMC two years ago, shortly after Zabbix 1.8 was released, we will also look at how the remote data collector - Zabbix proxy - has progressed since then. 

This talk will cover the basic functionality that Zabbix offers for those who are not familiar with it, as well as give high level overview of massive improvements and new features that arrived with Zabbix 2.0, released in May. We will look at data collection capabilities, including native agents and direct JMX monitoring support (the new Java gateway in 2.0). We will discover the improved inventory capability and how that ties in with network maps just moments later. We will have a quick look at visualisation capabilities like graphs and network maps, with a focus on more recent map-related features.

Eric Lippmann | Performance graphing mit inGraph (DE)

The primary NagiosGrapher based on RRD, is one of the most popular tools to display and storage performance data from Nagios. inGraph is the result of these long-term experiences, but also of the knowledge we gained by developing the  NETWAYSGraphersV2. The new inGraph is also a result of countless ideas, feature requests and the challenge to the complex data management and visualization of performance data in many projects. The creation and extension of templates can be done directly in the new web interface and stored as views or custom-cronk elements afterwards.

This presentation gives an insight into the architecture of inGraph and shows the standalone interface as well as the Icinga add-on. Examples will show the check_ingraph plugin and upcoming prediction feature in action, which gives the user a completely new way to work with performance data.

Christian Schneemann | Automatische Konfiguration von Nagios/Icinga mit Agordamon (DE)

Agordamon is a perl modul for script based configuration of Nagios- and Icinga-Systems. It makes admins live easier using reproducible methods for automatic configuration generation based on different input sources.

Input formats could be inventory lists or cmdb dumps. Results of the networkanalyse tool nmap could be used as well. Main areas for Agordamon are large networks with huge hardware lifecycle and guaranteed monitoring of newly installed components. The talk will give an introduction into Agordamon and show the supported capabilities in practical examples.

Michael Medin | Distributed Monitoring mit NSClient++(ENG)

The biggest update ever to NSClient++ was undoubtedly 0.4.0 which was released in May this year and 0.4.1 will soon follow adding even more new features.

This new version has the potential to drastically simplify(?) how we do monitoring on both Windows and Unix. And whilst the new version is backwards compatible it can be a challenge to understand how to explore whats new.

In this session I will use a hands on approach to demonstrate the basic concepts of the new NSClient++. One of the main focuses will be real-time monitoring and how to utilize that even with "active monitoring" (NRPE).

It will describe how to setup:

* How to get started, work with configuration and most importantly: how to get help!
* Real-time log file monitoring on Linux (and Windows)
* Using active monitoring (NRPE) with real-time results
* Using various protocols such as NRPE, NSCA, NRDP, NSCP, SysLog, Graphite, SMTP, check_mk, DNSCP...

Pierre Waellemacq | PMp - another approach to configure Nagios (ENG)

PMp is a pro-active configuration software suite that helps managing your monitoring setup. PMP is designed to scan IP's network and build automatically appropriate monitoring configurations. PMP leaves the end user free to decide what will be visible in the Monitoring UI and how it will be monitored through an intuitive Web interface. 

Today PMp is best used in combination with OMD to configure either Icinga or Nagios software and nothing prevents it from being extended to other software.

Martin Gerhard Loschwitz | Monitoring with Pacemaker (ENG)

Pacemaker has become the de-facto cluster management solution for Linux-based High Availability clusters. Many administrators, however, don’t leverage its exciting monitoring feature, which allows for seamless automatic restarts of previously failed resources. This presentation explains how Pacemaker’s monitoring feature works and how system operators can make the most out of it. It also demonstrates how resource agents – Pacemaker’s main interface to all the services running within a cluster – can be adopted to support more extensive monitoring features and take care of problems before they become critical. The examples given will deal with existing as well as newly-written resource agents. Last but not least, this presentation demonstrates best-practice setups with Pacemaker’s monitoring feature enabled, based on the VirtualDomain and the Asterisk resource agent.

Simon Meggle | End2End-Monitoring von Webapplikationen mit SAHI (DE)

With modern web applications not only the components shaping the result from a technical point of view should be monitored, but also the result from the user´s point of view. 

The open source tool SAHI allows to record comprehensive end-2-end checks for Web2.0 applications quickly and comfortably and also an automated playback. This presentation will show how to integrate SAHI tests into a Nagios- compatible monitoring system. The checks will be completed by time measurements of sub steps, virtualization of operating times in RRD graphs and also by the creation of screenshots for better fault analysis.

Alexander Wirt | Monitoring mit Nagios/Icinga und Debian GNU/Linux (DE)

The Nagios-Debian team has packetized almost all important components of the Nagios/Icinga ecosystem. This lecture gives an overview of the team, the packetized components and how to apply them. It is especially adapted for beginners who would like to build maintainable Nagios/Icinga setups in the shortest time possible.

Benjamin Heisig | smartITSM – Monitoring weitergedacht (DE)

For years now, great open source software has been applied like Icinga and Nagios, Request Tracker and OTRS, i-doit and iTop. Each of them brings enormous benefits, but combined a new world of possibilities opens up. This is exactly what this talk is about. 

We explain the interfaces of different ITSM-tools from monitoring, issue, ticketing and CMDB and show afterwards in a live demo how to benefit the most. By clever reutilization we avoid double efforts regarding data hosting. We will demonstrate how open source assures a better interoperability compared to closed source.

Jens Michelsons | Monitoring by extending the Net-SNMP agent (ENG)

One of the first questions in system and network management is should the monitoring agent-less or agent-based. Sometimes it's even not possible to use agents like NSClient++ or NRPE. But mostly it's no problem to install the operating systems SNMP agent.

With SNMP as an established standard protocol in the network management you can obtian various status and performance information. Not always you will find all what you need in the standard MIB-II or in the enterprise MIBs given by the manufacturer. But the possibility to enhance the Net-SNMP Agent will give you more flexibility.

One great feature are the build-in functions of Net-SNMP agent. Here you can configure things like Process Monitoring, Disk Usage Monitoring, Host Resources Group, Interfaces Group, System Load Monitoring and Log File Monitoring. Here you can also define thresholds. But not only this nice build-in functions make Net-SNMP agent to a powerful tool. Also the possibility to enhance the agent using the extend function as an example makes it very useful.

The presentation will of course show the possibilities of using the build in functions but it's main focus will be about how to extend the Net-SNMP agent using scripts.

Opsi can be installed on any Linux system and supports thus all Windows versions starting with XP upwards, up to Windows 2008 R2 Server in 32 as well as 64 bit version.

This presentation gives an overview on the new opsi-Nagios-Connector, explains the concept behind and shows how to monitor software rollouts, Windows clients as well as the entire opsi system by using a combination of opsi and Nagios/Icinga.

Mike Adolphs | Monitoring Behavioral Driven Infrastructures mit Cucumber-Nagios (ENG)

IT infrastructures are growing in complexity all the time, which is why it is becoming more and more important to ensure the functionality of services rather than just be able to monitor their general status. What use is a perfectly configured webserver if it always supplies the wrong content? Lindsay Holmwood's Nagios plugin cucumber-nagios is now on hand to solve this problem by providing a simple way of monitoring system behavior via integration testing.

This presentation provides insights into "behavioral driven infrastructure", explains the basics of cucumber and cucumber-nagios as well as showing features by way of a live example.
