The Open Source Data Center Conference 2019 was unique and fun, thanks to all the lovely people who took part.

You were there?

Thanks so much for attending this years’ OSDC! You missed a talk? Forgot a quote that you wanted to keep in mind? A specific demonstration was a bit too fast and you wanna review it? The Archive is now online! At osdc.de you can find all facts, presentation recordings, pictures and slides.

You couldn’t make it to Berlin this time? The OSDC Archive is also a great possibility to get an impression.

Stay tuned for upcoming conferences

Open Source Monitoring Conference | OSMC | Nuremberg, Nov 04 – 07, 2019
Open Source Camp on Foreman | OSCamp | Nuremberg, Nov 07, 2019

OSDC 2020 will take place in Berlin, June 17 – 18, 2020.
Save the date!

And now have fun browsing through OSDC 2019!

OSDC 2019: Unique views and phenomenal people

When you entered the big, luminous lobby at MOA Hotel Berlin your eyes catched it right away: OSDC‘s pink counter. Behind it either Markus or Lukas from the NETWAYS Events Team welcoming you to the conference, always ready to answer your hardest questions on rooms, rumors, food and all you need to know at OSDC. Thanks to these two guys we‘ve had the pleasure to enjoy a phenomenal conference!

What we’ve done

We‘ve heard tons of entertaining and informative technical talks. We‘ve exchanged thoughts and ideas. We’ve watched demos and fireworks. We got new stickers, job opportunities and insights into our business partners’ stacks, workflows and findings. Not to forget about meeting old pals and making new friends.

Want to know about the talks? Read Michi‘s and Tim‘s blogposts “OSDC 2019: Buzzwo…erm…DevOps, Agile & YAML programmers” and “OSDC 2019 Part 2 – Automating partching, VMs in containers & much more

Inbetween the two-day program Markus and Lukas placed a special treat. What would Berlin be without the Spree? Locals and tourists love its urban flair. And that we enjoyed in one of the best possible ways: on board of the restaurant ship Patio. We‘ve had sundowner drinks on deck, followed by delicious dinner and drinks combined with a unique view and the feeling of being on the water. Can you imagine a better place to socialize?

Thanks to all people – speakers and attendees – who made OSDC special! We are also thankful to our sponsors Thomas Krenn, SMSEagle, Linux Magazin and Admin Magazine for their support and all the NETWAYers for making it happen. See you in 2020, June 17 – 18! Save the date!

Stay tuned for the OSDC archive with all videos, slides and photos!

OSDC 2019 Part 2 – Automating patching, VMs in containers & much more

After having a really successful and sublime evening event on Tuesday, today was the last day of the Open Source Data Center Conference.

Reading all the #osdc tweets tells me that I missed a great conference. ?

— Marcel Weinberg (@winem_) May 15, 2019

Andreas Lehr and Rico Spiesberger showed off with their automated patch management using Ansible and Rundeck at Lidl and Kaufland.
Things to keep in mind:

  • rebooting bare metal takes time
  • firmware updates might change things
  • have enough space in /var/yum and /tmp -> might result in kernel panics (:

And why not doing a Live Demo at a production system and simply patch the spanish webshop?

Live demo at a new level: @crsp and @shakalandy patching the spanish shop live with the audience #osdc pic.twitter.com/EHa7nZJoPS

On the next slot, it was our pleasure to welcome Kosisochukwu Anyanwu with kinvolk.io. She showed us how to use KVM as a Hypervisor, running a VM in a Docker Container! Get in touch with her at @kosyfrances and feel free to ask her for their use case.

Nikhil Kathole presented how to simplify your IT Workflow with Katello and Foreman. You can use Foreman for provisioning, configuration and monitoring (to some extend) of your hosts. It also provides you with many plugins for flexibility for provisioning tools and infrastructure. If you want to manage your .rpms/.debs, katello should be your choice

A talk at #osdc about @ForemanProject by @NikhilKathole1 and missing #DirkGötz here

Troy Harvey started with tossing shirts and gave a quite interesting introduction into the concept of privacy. Privacy demands ethical behaviour of professionals and they should always try to automate things

3 Big Ideas: 1. Privacy has a strange history. 2. Privacy-first systems are designed by people with a professional ethic. 3. Privacy can be automated away. – @troyharvey from Carta #osdc pic.twitter.com/DiocjWGGhW

Furthermore, if you want to have to use slack, try to get a job at Carta.

Colin Charles closed the conference with mysql & mariadb security. Obviously breaches are bad and there are the issues you can easily avoid. Use TLS for replication – also update your instances!

I don’t know how you feel after these two days. But I feel like I want more of that! Save the date for next OSDC!

Goodbye! ??

See you next #osdc 17-18 June in Berlin
