Weekly Snap: Logstash Starter Pack, Schema.org & Monitoring Plugins

weekly snap13 – 17 January looked at logs, Windows 8 media applications, monitoring plugins and a handy page mark-up format.
Eva began the week by counting 85 days to the OSDC with Jan Doberstein’s talk, ‘The Truth is in the Logs”.
Martin continued in theme and introduced our new Logstash starter packs to get the log management tool up and running.
Ronny shared his experience with Windows 8 and media problems, while Michael forwarded news of a new monitoring plugins URL for Nagios and Icinga users.
Finally, Eric recommended webmasters to check out schema.org, the page mark-up format supported by Google, Bing and Yahoo.

Weekly Snap: Windows 8.x, Puppet & Verbosy

weekly snap30 December – 3 January started a new year with tips on Puppet, Mac and Windows, as well as a presentation on Verbosy.
Eva ended 2013 at 99 days to the OSDC 2014, sharing Eric’s talk on “Configuration Management with Verbosy”.
Bernd then discovered signature capturing on Mac’s Preview, while Christian started a new blog thread on Windows 8.x.
Lastly, Lennart offered his tip on Puppet iteration to create defined resources.

Weekly Snap: CeBIT 2013, Windows 8 and AutoIT

weekly snap4 – 8 March was CeBIT week, complemented with presentations and a couple reflections on Windows 8 and AutoIT from the office.
The first half of the CeBIT team left early on Monday for Hannover, and by Tuesday the fair was in full swing.
Bernd shared his presentation on “Open Source Data Center Virtualization with OpenNebula” while Tom made his on “Shared Server Ownership with Puppet” as the teams changed shifts.
Back at the office, Alexander tried Windows 8 and ended with a little tile-frustration, as Dirk dealt with a few AutoIT integration problems.
Eva continued counting 44 days to the OSDC, by sharing a video of Martin Gerhard Loschwitz’s talk on running “Your own Cloud with Open Stack Essex”.
Finally, the CeBIT adventures came to an end and Eva promised more photos to come.

Weekly Snap: Icinga Mobile, OSMC Workshops, Fujitsu Forum & Google Maps

10 – 14 October was a light hearted week with tips on integrating Google Maps and Icinga Mobile, two upcoming events and a tongue in cheek peek into a world with Windows 8.
To begin, Bernd got excited about NETWAYS’ participation in the Fujitsu Forum 2011, 9 – 11 November at the International Congress Center in Munich. Thanks to our established partnership with Fujitsu in monitoring, our team will be exhibiting a Server View and Icinga/Nagios integration developed in-house. The demo environment will simulate various hardware and service problems, to test in the proactive monitoring system onsite at the Fujitsu Forum.
Marcus then took a look at Icinga Mobile, the monitoring software’s official user interface for mobile devices. Icinga Mobile features all of Icinga Web’s important functions, including compound commands and Active Directory support. All that is needed for installation is a running Icinga Web and an Auth Key authorised user. For the curious, screenshots and an online demo can be found at the Icinga project website.
Following on, Ansgar had fun fantasising a future with the newly announced Windows 8 and its touch interface Metro, while Tobias gave us a crash course in integrating Google Maps to a website. Armed with his 3 step guide and Google’s documentation, it is easy to accomplish with minimal java script knowledge. First, embed the Google Maps API into the website, then add the java script code and load the map. Lastly, add the address marker to have a Google Map integrated in your website displaying a specific address.
Finally, Markus counted the 45 days down to this year’s Open Source Monitoring Conference. The bilingual program also features 3 intensive workshops on the conference eve. “SLA Reporting” is now booked out, so he recommended all interested to register for the “Icinga Kickstart” and “Configuration Management with Puppet” workshops as soon as possible. For those who’ve missed out, the NETWAYS Training Center still has 2 more opportunities for “SLA Reporting” and “Puppet Configuration Management” courses in December. But once again, places are limited so get in quick!
