Ganz schön turbulent war’s 2017 bei NETWAYS. Nun beginnt endlich die besinnliche Zeit des Jahres.
Das nehmen wir als Anlass, das ganze Jahr nochmal Revue passieren zu lassen.
Zu allererst stand unsere Skifahrt auf dem Programm, diesmal sind wir alle mit einem riesigen Bus zur Hütte gefahren und hatten tolle, verschneite Tage, viel Sahne im Gesicht und einen Heidenspaß.
Weiter ging’s auch direkt mit dem Jahresmeeting mit vielen spannenden Neuigkeiten, leckerem Essen und der Info zu unserem Unternehmenssommerseminar auf Mallorca. Ein guter Start schonmal, fanden wir.
Schwupps stand auch schon das erste Event vor der Türe. Das Icinga Camp war wie immer herzerwärmend – Vielen Dank an die 140 Teilnehmer, die das Event immer wieder zu dem machen, was es ist!
Kurz danach kam sofort der nächste Schrei, unsere Software as a Service Plattform nws.netways.de ging online. Mittlerweile hat das NMS-Team bei NETWAYS neun super praktische Apps in die Plattform eingebaut, die darauf warten, euch euren Arbeitsalltag zu erleichtern. Das ganze Team hat einen super Job gemacht, wie wir finden.
Im Mai hatten wir neben einer weiteren wunderbaren OSDC in Berlin eine Schulungspremiere im Kesselhaus – wir freuen uns sehr, dass Graylog nun fester Bestandteil in unserem Schulungsportfolio ist.
Neben den Teamevents aller Abteilungen, dem Sommermeeting, der NETWAYS Grillfeier und der Azubiprojektwoche im Sommer, waren wir mit auf den Deutschen OpenStack Tagen in München und auch auf der OSBConf in Köln war NETWAYS natürlich am Start.
Auch unsere Developer waren sehr fleißig und es ist einiges passiert. Alle Projekte liegen nun beispielsweise auf Github, der Icinga Exchange wurde gestemmt, es gibt ein Puppet Modul und ein Dashing für Icinga 2. Auch in Elasticsearch und Graylog ging es voran. Noch dazu haben wir so viele Azubis wie nie zuvor im Development, weiter so! Besonders stolz sind wir in diesem Jahr darauf, dass wir 2017 deutlich mehr Request-Tracker Projekte und Consulting hatten, aber auch mehr Datenbanken!
Außerdem neu war der NETWAYS Monitor als erste eigens entwickelte Hardware in unserem NETWAYS Shop. Nebenbei wurden zusätzlich neun super interessante Webinare gestemmt, die Ihr alle im Archiv finden könnt. Außerdem waren wir auf der Cebit vertreten und konnten hier tolle Kontakte zu Braintower knüpfen. Ein besonderes Highlight war Christians erster OSMC-Talk, den er mit Bravour gemeistert hat.
Bei Twitter sehen wir hauptsächlich Essens- und Reisebilder unserer Consultants, aber was diese Herren das Jahr über alles leisten, ist schon beachtlich. Neben dem festen Bürotag, allerhand Schulungen (122 Trainingstage) und vielen, vielen Remote-Tagen waren unsere flotten Herren insgesamt 1126 Tage beim Kunden. Chapeau!
Im September hatten wir unser absolutes Highlight: #netwaysgoesmalle, dieser Hashtag sollte reichen.
Ehe man sich versah wurden die Tage dunkler und die Bräune der Haut wandelte sich wieder in gewohntes Gelbwurst-Weiß um – Also muss wohl die OSMC vor der Tür stehen. Unser absolutes Lieblings- Open Source Event. Dieses Jahr war die Konferenz von einer ganz besonders herzlichen und aufgeschlossenen Atmosphäre der Teilnehmer geprägt, wir sind immer noch ganz hin und weg und können’s kaum in Worte fassen. DAS WAR DER WAHNSINN!!!
Das letzte Event nach den erstmals durchgeführten NETWAYS Startupdays war unsere eigene Weihnachtsfeier, auf der wir das Jahr gemütlich ausklingen lassen konnten und nochmal gemampft haben was das Zeug hält.
Nun bleibt uns nur, euch allen ein gesundes, erfolgreiches, neues Jahr 2018 zu wünschen.

OSDC 2017 – What a great week full of open source!

kend, we caught up on missed sleep and we were really happy about the successful Open Source Data Center Conference last week in Berlin.
The OSDC 2017 began with our workshop day on Tuesday with „Graylog-Centralized Log Management“, „Mesos Marathon – Orchestrating Docker Containers“ and „Terraform – Infrastructure as Code“.
On Wednesday and Thursday attendees could join 23 interesting talks on case studies, the latest developments and best practices. CONTAINERS AND MICROSERVICES | CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT | TESTING, METICS AND ANALYSIS and TOOLS&INFRASTRUCTURE were forming the core of the conference! On Wednesday evening, we went to the Umspannwerk Ost. There was much sun, and so we could all sit outside and discuss the exciting days. Furthermore, it was enough time for networking, establishing contacts and becoming more familiar with the open source community!
After the conference was gone on Thursday, we were happy to meet you all in Berlin and also a little bit sad, because three exciting conference days came to an end.

Work with professionals, find your flight

I was looking for flights back to Germany and have got the impression that somehow I’m not as successful as I would like to be.
Given that I’m booking three months in advance and I’m not tied to a specific date, route or airline, there should be some pretty inexpensive flights from Sydney to Nuremberg or at least to Frankfurt.
But the cheapest that I could find was $920 via Beijing with Air China which I did not consider as a nice option. Next to that a pretty convenient option via Kuala Lumpur about $1470.
It seems to me like there must be other options that are just hiding from my aged eyes. I was using www.hipmunk.com, which I like a lot for its very convenient user interface and great sorting options.
But there must be something else! And it is. A blog post from Julian came to mind. So I decided to use the experience of an expert. I like to ask an expert. Of course as I am an expert in my profession and work as consultant. So this is daily business.
Therefore I launched a flight contest for $44. You can get the contest launched for less, but I decided to pay more because I think experts shouldn’t work for cheap. You can launch your contest and get a 25% discount if you want to.
Here are my findings how good this works
First of all, it’s only worth the effort if the flight your looking for is more than just from NUE to TXL or whatever other simple thing. But I was aiming for a good affordable way to get the family from Australia to southern Germany with a nice layover maybe.
Part 1:
Pretty fast, one of the experts came up with a flight from Sydney to Singapore (1st layover) to Riyadh to London (2nd layover) to Nuremberg. This option had a amazing price tag of $614 per person. But sadly on further inspection it did not quite match my expectations in terms of quality. I have opted „I’ll pay more for better airlines“. The airlines on this offer were the ones with the worst ratings available. I can absolutely stand this if it’s for a short flight, but not over the long haul like from Singapore to London with a stop over of more than 6 hours.
Actually I didn’t realise this until I hired that expert (which is the way of saying: „this guy shall get the money“ at Flightfox) and booked the last leg of that offer (yes, you still book your flights on your own at Flightfox). But as I booked the cheap Ryanair flight from London to Nuremberg and was about to book the Saudi Arabian Airlines flight, it got pretty bad. During booking I was asked to give an address in London which I didn’t had at that time. I have to say this saved me from booking that Airline and that I looked up some reviews at this point with showed me how embarrassing that airline seems to be. I ended up asking the expert for another option and expressed my concerns regarding Saudi Air and that 6 hour stop over. But this time the expert was not nearly as fast as with the first offer. A day later I switched experts and moved from RDX to Bloodhound (experts are nicknamed at Flightfox).
Part 2:
The second expert offered a pretty good setup in the first place. He found flights from Sydney to Singapore (layover) to Kuala Lumpur to Frankfurt for $810 per person. At this time, as I’ve already booked the flight from London to Nuremberg I asked him to help me finding a setup that includes this. He answered right away and found a connecting flight with Malaysian Airlines from Singapore to London.
All set!
I booked the flights and after that the other expert got back to me with the same flight plan that I’ve already booked announcing it for $688.
The flights were not as cheap as shown on Flightfox, but I still got a deal way better than what I was able to find on my own.
Why are the prices different from what the experts say?
To be selected, the experts have to compete with each other. One very important measurement for the customer is the price. I think that’s the reason why some (maybe all) experts just don’t add costs that they should add. In my case this was extra luggage on the low-cost airlines Scoot and Ryanair. In addition to that, I selected premium seats ($50) for the Kuala Lumpur to London flight which is arguable for sure.
All in all, I’ve paid $875 per person which is $137 more than advertised by the expert, but still $595 less than what I came up with without help.
That’s what I call a good advice from an expert, even if there is room for improvement. And that’s why I’m happy to pay for this advice.

Windows 8 – Wieso ausgerechnet die Kacheln!
In dem ganzen Cebit-Trubel schiebe ich ganz still und leise ein Thema dazwischen, dass von vielen nur müde beschmunzelt oder gar abgrundtief verachtet wird. Bei Windows teilen sich ohnehin bereits die Meinungen vieler Entwickler, hinzu kommt dass jedes zweite Betriebssystem aus diesem Hause einfach nur floppt. Somit wäre rein statistisch gesehen Windows 8 wieder eine Katastrophe und viele rechnen sogar so fest damit, dass sie lieber gleich von vornherein aufs nächste warten.
Ich habe mich trotz aller Befürchtungen, Klischees und Negativen Meinungen mal herangewagt, denn so schnell wird Windows wohl nicht vom Markt verschwinden und evtl. wird dieses Kachel-Design ja The next Big Thing. Dabei hab ich festgestellt, dass die groß angepriesenen Features völlig nutzlos sind (Kachel-Design, Apps) aber andere kleinere Neuerungen tatsächlich einen größeren Nutzen bringen. Warum ausgerechnet diese Kacheln so sein müssen, wie sie sind und man keinerlei Möglichkeit bekommt, diese auch nur irgendwie zu individualisieren (bis auf zwei vorgegebene Kachelgrößen), ist mir immer noch ein Rätsel (Vielen Dank Frau Larson-Green!). Denn zugegeben, das Startmenü wirkt wie der anmontierte übergroße Heckspoiler an einem Moped. Auch das zweite große Highlight, die Apps, sind eher als Gimmick anzusehen, denn der Zwang jede App im Vollbild auszuführen nimmt einem jegliche Flexibilität. Kann man Windows 8 jetzt auf diese zwei Dinge festmachen und pauschal sagen „taugt net“ oder entlockt es einem vielleicht doch noch ein „bassd scho“, was dem berlinerischem „Det is Knorke!“ entsprechen würde?
