Weekly Snap: CeBIT slides, AUFS data migration & OSDC iPad grabs

7 – 11 March returned from the CeBIT with presentation slides, a tip for data migration and a crazy OSDC iPad special.
Once back from the CeBIT, Julian shared his presentation on “IT Service Management with Open Source” with all. For an overview of the most important ITSM tools from the open source world for Incident & Problem Management, Event Management, Operations Management, Service Desk and CMDB, check out the slides.
Sebastian followed with a tip for data migration: AUFS (Another UnionFS). He sees it as an alternative to the popular rsync, which requires the source file system to be taken offline or set to read-only during the syncing process. AUFS on the other hand is an ‘overlay file system’ which enables the writing of read-only media such as CD-ROMs. Sebastian gave an example of a cluster with min. 2 nodes for uninterrupted data migration. Pre-requisite for AUFS is a kernel with AUF support, often packaged for distributions such as Debian.
Lastly, Manuela announced a special OSDC + iPad offer. Dubbed “Package i”, the first 30 registrations receive alongside 2 days of open source knowledge and 2 nights accommodation at the conference hotel, an iPad equipped with 32GB and wi-fi. With a focus on “Automated Systems Management”, OSDC speakers include Ken Barber of Puppet Labs (Advanced Puppet Topics), Prof. Stefan Edlich (NoSQL in the Cloud: Patters, Architecture and Experiences) and Bernd Erk (Icinga – Enterprise Open Source Monitoring). Register quick to score yourself 2 informative days and an iPad to boot!

CeBIT Vortrag IT Management mit Open Source

Weekly Snap: Debian v6.0, MySQL Features, Jasper Training & Cloud Expo Europe

7 – 11 February got excited about the new Debian v6.0 release, new features in MySQL 5.5 and the upcoming Jasper Reporting training course – not to mention Julian’s visit to the Cloud Expo Europe.
Julian celebrated the release of Debian v 6.0 (codenamed Squeeze) and its wealth of new packages and software versions. As annouced by the Debian release team, these included Apache 2.2.16, PHP 5.3.3, MySQL 5.1.49 and Asterisk 1.6.2.9, but also the latest Nagios and now Icinga too. “Technical preview” GNU/kFreeBSD was introduced, allowing Debian to be booted with a FreeBSD kernel.
He then went on to share his “ITSM with Open Source Software” presentation he made at the Cloud Expo Europe in London with slides to download.
Bernd started a new series titled MySQL New Features, with a post on semi-synchronous replication. An alternative to the default asynchronous replication, it solves the problem of transactions being lost when a master fails. Instead of the master simply writing changes to local bin logs and disregarding the processing done by the slaves, semi-synchronous replication ensures the status “committed” is only achieved when the transaction has been processed by at least one slave. InnoDB is required for its use and the ACID criteria must be met. For admins, he offers the Rpl_semi_sync_master_no_tx variable for details on the transactions still open, and not committed on a slave.
Finally, Rebecca announced the upcoming training course on Nagios SLA Reporting with Jasper. The two day workshop on 12 -13 April will introduce students to the concept of reporting, dive into the installation and operation of iReport and Jasper Server, demonstrate their integration to Nagios( NDO) or Icinga (IDO) and other data sources such as ticketing systems and RRD databases. Students will also learn to design, generate and distribute dynamic reports. Registration is open, and more information is available at our training centre.

Cloud Expo Europe: ITSM with Open Source Software

Last week I was invited to give a talk at Cloud Expo Europe in London.
IT Service Management with Open Source Tools
„Building a infrastructure for modern systems management can be a very expensive project – with commercial software. But Open Source is an alternative, because today there are tools for all important service management processes available. The speech gives an overview about the most mature tools for Incident & Problem Management, Event Management, Operations Management, Service Desk and CMDB.“
But how does this relate to cloud computing?
One of the important questions about ITSM and Cloud Computing is: Why do we still need IT service management. And I think there are two main reasons: First, the cloud does not change WHAT is being delivered, it changes HOW services are being delivered to end users. So it basically is just a new way how services are being sourced. And second, there will always be coexistence between internal IT assets and clouds. Internal systems and cloud applications need to be integrated and that creates a demand for even more IT service management.
