Rebecca reminded us of the virtues of centralized configuration management with Puppet. In the same breath, she gave us the date of the next Puppet training course on 13 -15 September. More details on the course and registration can be found at the NETWAYS Training Center.
She also shared two new success stories from projects at Bitmarck Service GmbH and Hirschvogel Automotive Group: The first with a Nagios implementation and Fujitsu servers, the second with Sensatronics monitoring hardware. Vorträge des CeBIT Open Source Forums jetzt auch online verfügbar!
Auf der CeBIT Hannover ist das Thema Open Source mittlerweile fest etabliert – bereits zum dritten Mal gab es hier einen eigenen Schwerpunkt, welcher von internationalen Branchenverbänden und Interessenvertretungen wie der Linux Foundation, Linux International, der Free Software Foundation Europe und dem LIVE Linux Verband unterstützt wird.
Ein jährliches Schmankerl ist dabei auch immer das Open Source Forum, das von Linux New Media organisiert wird. Während der gesamten CeBIT gab es dort hochkarätige Fachvorträge mit wechselnden Schwerpunktthemen rund um Open Source und Linux. Die Vorträge wurden per Live-Stream übertragen, und mittlerweile sind die Videos auch für das Archiv bearbeitet und auf http://www.linux-magazin.de/Events/CeBIT-Open-Source-Forum-2011 verfügbar!
Weekly Snap: CeBIT Reflections, MySQL Slides & a New NETWAYS Training Year
14 – 18 March closed the chapter on CeBIT 2011 and opened the NETWAYS training year.
Rebecca announced the start of the NETWAYS school year with three training courses: ‘Monitoring with Nagios’ (22 -25 March) ‘Puppet Configuration Management’ (24-26 May), and ‘Nagios SLA Reporting with Jasper Reports’ (28 – 29 September). All come with accommodation, catering, course laptop and materials plus a small dinner and drinks event on the 2nd last day for casual networking. Should more individualized training be called for, NETWAYS offers customized workshops and online courses in partnership with the Linux Academy are also available for learning at your own pace and place. Bernd then shared his ‘MySQL in Large Environments’ presentation from CeBIT for download, following Julian’s on ‘Open Source IT Management’. On the side, he invited readers to post if they use any of the new MySQL features such as partitioning or semi-synchronous replication.
In theme, Manuela reflected on the big CeBIT just past, with more than 4200 companies from over 70 countries and a collective, annual purchasing volume of over €50 billion. Exhibiting in the Open Source Park, Manuela and the rest of the NETWAYS team enjoyed the many good discussions with passersby, where Icinga and its new version 1.30 in comparison to Nagios featured alongside particular interest in our Hosting and Managed Services offering. As a final CeBIT farewell, she shared a live stream of Philip Deneus’ presentation on ‘Monitoring with Icinga’ and a few snapshots of the few days in Hannover. CeBIT war auch 2011 wieder ein Highlight
Die CeBIT schließt ihr Tore und auch in 2011 gehen wir mit einem durchweg positivem Gefühl nach Hause. Nach wie vor ist die CeBIT in Hannover die Veranstaltung der Entscheider: in diesem Jahr waren mehr als 500 CIOs internationaler Konzerne mit einem jährlichen Einkaufsvolumen von über 50 Milliarden Euro vor Ort. Mehr als 4200 Unternehmen aus über 70 Ländern hatten sich an der CeBIT 2011 beteiligt.
Wir waren in diesem Jahr direkt in der ‚Open Source Halle‘ 2 am Gemeinschaftsstand des Open Source Park zu finden. An dieser Stelle ein herzliches Dankeschön an die Organisation des Open Source Parks durch Pluspol – es war wirklich toll! Sehr starkes Interesse weckte auf alle Fälle das Thema Icinga und hier vor allem dessen Neuerungen in der Version 1.3.0 sowie die Änderungen im Vergleich zu Nagios. Ebenso gab es viel Interesse zum Thema Hosting und Managed Services Dienstleistungen. Zu diesen Themen haben wir viele Gespräche geführt und vor allem am Mittwoch und Donnerstag einen großen Besucheransturm zu verzeichnen.
Neben den Gesprächen direkt am Stand fanden auch die Vorträge zu den Themen „OpenITSM – IT Service Management mit Open Source Software” und „Enterprise Monitoring mit Icinga“ regen Anklang und waren meist bis auf den letzten Platz gefüllt.

Weekly Snap: CeBIT slides, AUFS data migration & OSDC iPad grabs
7 – 11 March returned from the CeBIT with presentation slides, a tip for data migration and a crazy OSDC iPad special.
Once back from the CeBIT, Julian shared his presentation on “IT Service Management with Open Source” with all. For an overview of the most important ITSM tools from the open source world for Incident & Problem Management, Event Management, Operations Management, Service Desk and CMDB, check out the slides.
Sebastian followed with a tip for data migration: AUFS (Another UnionFS). He sees it as an alternative to the popular rsync, which requires the source file system to be taken offline or set to read-only during the syncing process. AUFS on the other hand is an ‘overlay file system’ which enables the writing of read-only media such as CD-ROMs. Sebastian gave an example of a cluster with min. 2 nodes for uninterrupted data migration. Pre-requisite for AUFS is a kernel with AUF support, often packaged for distributions such as Debian.
Lastly, Manuela announced a special OSDC + iPad offer.
