stackconf 2022 | Recap Day 1

stackconf is happening! Our first day of this year’s stackconf started with a wholesome breakfast in the Melia Hotel in the heart of Berlin. From the dining room we had a great view on the river Spree in the morning hours. After breakfast we were well prepared to listen to the first talks. Our CEO Bernd Erk was very happy to be able to welcome so many guests finally again in person. This wasn’t possible the year before because of reasons we know all too well. After two editions of stackconf online it felt good to meet in person

Check that Point!

One interesting guest was Adrian Reber presenting his project „Checkpoint and Restore in Userspace“ (CRIU) which might make live migrations of containers in Kubernetes an easy task in the future. With CRIU you can create checkpoints of containers which contain all data from the memory. In his live demo he went through the process of creating a checkpoint image of a container running in Kubernetes and pushing the checkpoint image to an container registry. Afterwards he created new containers from this image. There is still some manual work involved but the future goal is a „kubectl migrate“ command that makes it possible to live migrate containers to other nodes and to even have automatic scheduling of live migrations.

After Mr. Rebers talk it was time for lunch. We gathered at the dining room again and enjoyed our meals. Right after the lunch break it was time for some ignite talks. In one of them Daniel Uhlmann gave a short rundown of the basics of Site Reliability Engineering. For anyone interested, he recommended the free to read book (Site Reliability Engineering).

Philipp Krenn entered the stage after the ignite talkers and made the point (among others) that well structured health checks can still be very useful to detect failures in your systems. It doesn’t always need to be the observability approach.

A Good Corporate Citizen

Dawn Foster spoke about the „Dos“ and „Don’ts“ of contributing to open source projects as an employee of a corporation. After her talk in title „How to be a Good Corporate Citizen in Open Source“ a vivid discussion about the influence of profit-oriented corporations on non-profit open source projects emerged.

The second last talk of the day was held by Sebastian Saemann. He challenged the widespread notion of „Do not run stateful applications in Kubernetes“ by introducing the audience to Vitess – „a database clustering system for horizontal scaling of MySQL„. Mr. Saemann pointed out many advantages of running your MySQL databases in a Kubernetes Cluster with the help of the Vitess-Operator. In a live demo he also showed how easy it is to move a table from one database to a new database with zero downtime of the application.

Day 1 of stackconf will end with the evening event in the splendid Capitol Yard Golf Lounge. After dinner the attendees will let the evening come to an end with some drinks. I am already looking forward to it! As much as I am looking forward to Day 2. See you all tomorrow!

NWS goes stackconf

About stackconf 2022

This year’s stackconf takes place in the beautiful Meliá Berlin. After a long draught, the conference can finally take place in person! We can finally meet other developers, users and people interested in the same topics again.
The conference features talks about a wide variety of topics related to cloud native technologies, infrastructure automation and lessions learned.

Who is going?

Being a silver sponsor most of the NWS team is present at the conference. We would love to get in touch with you and talk tech! in addition our CEO, Bernd Erk, is going to give the opening speech and Sebastian Saemann will show us how to use Vitess on Kubernetes with an intriguing demo.

What am I personally looking forward to?

I personally can’t wait to get insights into the big Spotify outage in March, which I was effected by as well. It’s always great to hear from other companies how they handle failures of any kind. Another talk I can’t wait to see is the Metal³ talk about provisioning infrastructure directly with Kubernetes. Since many workloads seem to shift to Kubernetes it’s a natural progression to manage everything with it. Unfortunately that means that I will miss the equally interesting talk about Nomad, an alternative to Kubernetes, and Waypoint. But since every talk will be recorded and uploaded onto the NETWAYS YouTube Channel, I’ll definitely catch up on it!

What to expect?

There will be people from all over the world joining the conference. It will be an opportunity to meet like-minded, interesting people and to exchange opinions, discuss experiences or just enjoy a chat with them.
The schedule already reveals that there will be many top engineers, CTOs and developers from all sorts of companies giving insights into their business, as well as experiences, best practices and invaluable knowledge learned by doing the wrong thing. A lot of interesting topics will be covered – there is surely something for everyone!

Are you going?

I’m already excited to go there and can’t wait to learn many new things regarding Kubernetes, CI/CD and much more.
Me and my colleagues are also thrilled that we can join the conference in person! Having the chance to meet other people face to face is just something different and also watching keynotes and demos (fail) live on site is always exciting. Will you be there, too? We sure hope so – otherwise, you can still get your ticket(s) for the on-site event in Berlin!

Systems Engineer

DevOpsDays Berlin cancelled

The DevOpsDays Berlin have been cancelled for this year due to Corona. „Though there were good arguments for running the conference, most of us felt uncomfortable to expose people to a potential danger that isn’t fully understood yet“, the organizers said. They decided to suspend the event in 2020 and to hold it again in 2021. Holding the conference online was not really an option for the Berlin crew. Other DevOpsDays who did an online version of their event had great success with the attendee numbers, but they felt that this would miss out with the most important part of the conference: Bringing people together in person and the community aspect of the event. The Berlin organizers are planning an event for 2021, which can be expected to fall into the same time as this or the last years: Beginning to middle of fall 2021.

Entries from this Call for Papers won’t be kept for next year („because the only thing older than a ‚Tech Talk‘ from a year ago is yesterday’s newspaper“). Who already proposed would need to create a new entry next year. The DevOpsDays Berlin organizers thank all speakers for their awesome talk and session proposals this year, and encourage and invite people to propose again in 2021.

Keep an eye on https://devopsdays.berlin/ or on the Twitter feed @blndevops to stay informed and get the new dates.

DevOpsDays Berlin: Call for Papers open. Get involved!

The organizers of DevOpsDays Berlin once again invite IT professionals with DevOps experience to propose a talk and show their interest in contributing. DevOpsDays is a technical conference, aimed at developers, sysadmins and anyone else involved in technology, whether expert or beginner. The idea behind it: Understanding each others way of working, improving code and cooperation. It was the series of DevOpsDays conferences that made the term DevOps as popular as it is today.

The Call for Papers for DevOpsDays Berlin runs until July 05, 2020. Papers can be submitted at cfp.devopsdays.berlin/2020/.

If you have a hiring success story, can talk about diversity in teams or leadership, have a great tale to tell about spreading DevOps to the rest of your company or organization: Don’t hesitate to propose.

There are three different formats

  • 30-minute talk: Presented during the conference, usually in the mornings. Anyone can submit a presentation. The DevopsDays Berlin program council will choose the best presentations among these submissions, which will appear in the agenda of the conference.
  • Ignite talk: Presented during the Ignite sessions (scheduling varies). The ignite talks are a valuable portion of knowledge, lasting for 5 minutes. 20 slides change automatically every 15 seconds giving a condensed overview on a topic.
  • Hands-On session: Presentations of technical nature lasting for 45 minutes. Speakers should demonstrate a part of their work and give people the chance to ask questions. No product demos allowed.

There will also be Open Space sessions during the conference. The Open Space format is a very interesting and simple one. Short time before the Open Space starts, all attendees can suggest topics and vote on what topic is the most wanted. After this, participants create discussion groups. It is not necessary to propose ahead of time. The topics are suggested in person at the conference.

Get involved!

DevOpsDays events are unique in that they are entirely volunteer-supported, and not hosted by an industry vendor or for profit. If you are in any way interested in supporting that, be it by speaking or by volunteering at the event: Reach out to the organizers. Get involved!

OSCamp on Bareos: Let’s talk about backups!

Heterogeneous server landscapes are more the rule than the exception in many companies today. The technical requirements for software systems for data backup, archiving and recovery are increasing accordingly. What are the challenges coming with these changes? Let’s talk about it!

Let’s talk about backups at OSCamp!

CFP until end of march

The Call for Papers for the Open Source Camp (OSCamp) on Bareos is still open. Until March 31, 2020 you got the chance to submit your paper. Ideally you give a comprehensive technical insight into Bareos and offer administrators new impulses for data backup, archiving and recovery. Each presentation is scheduled for 45 minutes, including a 5 to 10-minute Q&A session. All software presented must be freely available for download and therefore meet open source standards such as GPL.

OSCamp – the series

The OSCamp on Bareos is where the community, users and developers meet – it’s an opportunity to talk to like-minded people and share expertise – as a speaker on stage, or as attendee during discussions and breaks.

Open Source Camp is a conference format dedicated to different Open Source projects and products and of course their communities. Get in touch with the Open Source enthusiasts behind the presented project. Learn new features and techniques, benefit from their extensive know-how and get up-dated on the latest developments. Backup your seat!

Join stackconf too

OSCamp #5 on Bareos takes place directly after stackconf, on June 19, 2020 in Berlin. Conference and camp venue is the same. More about stackconf at stackconf.eu! This is your chance to join two outstanding Open Source events in one week!
