Weekly Snap: Icinga 1.3, NETWAYS YouTube, OSDC Early Birds & Squoia iCARUS

von | Feb 21, 2011 | WeeklySnap

14 – 18 February brought a new Icinga release, a new NETWAYS YouTube channel, the end of early bird OSDC specials and a small temperature monitoring device.
Hardware man Martin introduced a nifty solution to temperature monitoring via SMS and GSM. Sequoia iCARUS is a compact device that can monitor remote server rooms’ temperature without an internet connection. Configured by SMS, the device simply needs electricity and GSM reception. Recorded temperatures can be periodically sent by SMS and email, as can alerts when thresholds have been exceeded.
Manuela was on fire this week, first reminding us to snap up the early bird offer to the Open Source Data Center Conference 2011 coming up on 6 – 7 April. To give first time goers an impression of these events, she shared a video view of OSDC’s sibling conference the OSMC – Open Source Monitoring Conference. With the program near completion, she highlighted a couple presentations: System Automation with Chef (Jochen Lillich), OpenNebula Tutorial (Constantino Vázquez Blanco), Enterprise Linux Server File Systems (Dr. Udo Seidel) and NoSQL in the Cloud: Patterns, Architecture & Experiences (Prof. Stefan Edlich). Registrations before 28 Feb can save up to 20%, so Manuela urged all to hurry.
She went on to forward news of Icinga’s latest stable release, version 1.30. The open source monitoring solution now comes with new features such as IPv6 support alongside IPv4 and improvements to Icinga Core threading, overall performance and stability. In the web interface, through a Cronk builder, often accessed views can now be easily filtered and sorted to be saved as custom Cronks (widgets) under categories the user specifies. More on the new features and fixes can be found at www.icinga.org where the release too can be downloaded.
Finally, Manuela celebrated NETWAYS arrival on YouTube. The NETWAYS channel will feature videos from events such as the OSMC and OSDC, as well as future presentations and workshops. She offered free tickets to the CeBIT 2011 to anyone who may have any videos from their visits to NETWAYS events which they would be happy to share there. Simply email events@netways.de.
