2 – 6 August started the month with a look into open source and IT process automation business trends and a call out to Linux Consultants to join the NETWAYS team.
In a research study roll, Julian shared a report published the “Computerwoche” on the lacking IT process automation in many companies. Less than 50% of the IT departments which partook in the study had automated 40% of its business and IT processes. The main reason for this was the lack of resources and fear of embarking on a cumbersome project. Nonetheless, all agreed that automation promised significant savings, with 2/3 expecting concrete savings of 11 – 20%. Julian suggested however that in actuality savings could be much higher as not only unnecessary manual labour is avoided but many errors too. Fear of high costs is also unfounded, as many open source tools for automation can be found such as Request Tracker (Service Management), Puppet (Configuration Management) and Mule (Enterprise Service Bus).
Following on, he quoted another study which found more than 2/3 of CIOs interviewed in public and private sectors across USA, UK and Ireland intended to invest more in open source this year. Furthermore, over 1/3 planned to migrate a essential applications to open source. Interesting to see was their motivation – the majority saw open source to offer better quality (76%), greater reliability (71%) and higher security (71%) beyond the potential cost savings (50%).
Finally, Karo announced a position open for a Linux Consultant with expertise in systems management and monitoring. Duties pre-sales and post project support, support, project implementation and documentation for customers in and outside Germany. If you are confident in Bash, Perl, C/C++ and a range of monitoring systems (Nagios, OpenNMS, HP OpenView etc.) yet also in customer relations, we look forward to hearing from you.
