Weekly snap: Sugar logic hooks and hard drive nukes

von | Jul 13, 2009 | WeeklySnap

July 6 – 10 was a week of tips and tricks from our two big bloggers Bernd E and Julian, garnished with a view reflections from our interns warmly known as “the Schorsch” and “the Eric”. Bernd E offered a few tips on extending SugarCRM with logic hooks and welcomed NSClient++ to our server rooms- proud to sponsor the servers of windows monitoring tool which has since become an industry standard.
Even better news from Bernd was that NSClient++ Project Maintainer, Michael Medin would join our Open Source Monitoring Conference once again, to update participants on the latest in Application Monitoring and host a Windows Monitoring workshop. More to OSMC topics, Julian posted survey results which pointed to a broadened interest in monitoring tools the likes of Icinga, Zabbix and OpenNMS; reassuring us however that Nagios will remain in the conference limelight.
Back to tricks, Julian showed how to save time in server reinstallation by simply saving old system lists of all installed packets. To top it off, he gave us the low down on securely erasing data off hard drives, revealing that formatting deceivingly leaves the chance of data restoration wide open. What to do? Overwrite, overwrite, overwrite. That many times, or for servers – the famous Darik’s Boot and Nuke to do the task of extinguishing every last trace of data for you.
