A Framework for Hardware-based Monitoring

Nagios is a monitoring tool with a primary emphasis on network-based software services. Modern datacenters, however, have many different types of equipment and services to monitor, many of which Nagios cannot support out of the box. For example, Nagios has no means of determining whether or not a node is actually powered on or not. We show how Nagios can be used as a framework for hardware-based monitoring of services and equipment. As a motivating example, we discuss the design and development of a series of plugins for the Servprise WebReboot line of products. Through the example, we show how Nagios can be used to integrate third-party products with an existing network monitoring deployment with minimal impact on existing infrastructure.

Kevin Menard is Vice President of Servprise International, Inc. His company makes products for the IT industry. Their flagship product line is the WebReboot, which allows administrators to remotely power-on, power-off, and reboot unresponsive servers. With their enterprise line of products, tghey can also monitor host power state, temperature, and other attributes. They rely on Nagios to tie the monitoring in with the actions. They developed a set of plugins that can use a WebReboot product to monitor a host and take corrective action with that host. E.g., if a host is overheating, turn it off. Or, if a host is power-off, turn it back on.

He has been an open source developer for many years now. Primary he was developer of the ApacheToolbox project, he is an Apache Cayenne PMC member, and has contributed to numerous other open source projects.
