Nagios Plugins

Nagios uses plugins for monitoring servers and services. With this plugin architecture, Nagios can be easily extended for new monitoring requirements. Currently there are hundreds of free plugins, just a small proportion of which are listed below;

Windows NT, 2000 or 2003

CPU utilization
used hard-drive space
used and free virtual memory
availability of individual NT services
availability of individual processes
as well as all performance data that windows provides through the system monitor

Linux & Unix

TCP: availability of a TCP Port
UDP: availability of a UDP Port
Disk: free or used space on partitions
Load: CPU utilization
Databases: availability of a data base (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle)
Procs: number of running processes
Users: number of logged-in users
VSZ: memory consumption of processes
SMB: used space on SMB(CIFS) shares
Swap: free memory space on a swap partition

Network Services

SNMP: retrieval of SNMP information from other devices
DNS: availability of name resolution
FTP: availability of File Transfer Protocol
HTTP: availability of individual websites
LDAP: LDAP directories
NNTP: news services
PING: availabilty of hosts via ping
SMTP: availability of SMTP mail servers
POP: availability of POP email servers
Time: check a time server
Real: availability of a real media server
Radius: availability of a radius server
SSH: availability of SSH servers

Hardware & miscellaneous

UPS: check an uninterruptible power supply
NetApp: availability of and other data from NetApp Filers
NwStat: various Novell Server data
SAP: availability of important SAP services
HP: check HP deskjet printers (toner empty, etc.)
